Stellar is an international composer competition developed by Danish publishing house Edition Svitzer in 2021. This year, participants are to submit compositions written for solo marimba. There are two different categories; Category A is for works at intermediate playing level, and Category B is for works at advanced playing level. The participants in the Stellar competition will be competing for generous cash prizes, publicity packages, and much more. A highly qualified international jury will decide on the winners of each category. People of all ages, genders, and nationalities are encouraged to participate in the competition. The entrance fee for participants is 5 USD. The deadline for submitting the compositions is 1 July 2021, and the winners will be announced on the 1 August 2021. What is Stellar?

Stellar is an international composer competition that focuses on percussion music. The competition was created by Danish publishing house Edition Svitzer, and in 2021 all submitted works are required to be solo marimba compositions.

Can I apply?

Anyone of all ages and nationalities can apply; no restrictions!

Does it cost to enter the competition?

The cost to enter the competition is 5 USD.

When is the deadline for submitting my work?

The deadline for submitting your work is 1 July 2021, and the winners will be announced on 1 August 2021.

How many awards are there?

There are five awards to be won; 1st prize for Category A, 1st prize for Category B, 2nd prize for Category A, second prize for Category B, and the Audience Prize.

What level should I compose for?

You have two choices regarding the level of your composition. Category A is for intermediate solo marimba pieces (4.3 or 5.0 octave) and Category B is for advanced solo marimba pieces (5.0 octave). That choice is entirely up to you.

What if my composition doesn’t fit within the category I have chosen?

If the jury establishes that your composition doesn’t fit within the applied category, you will be contacted and offered to either change categories or withdraw from the competition.

Can I apply both categories?

Sure thing, go ahead.

Can I apply with a composition that I have already written?

Yes, but the composition must be written in 2021. The purpose of the competition is to initiate the creation of new pieces.

What should the duration of my composition be?

The composition’s duration is entirely up to you, though minimum duration of 3 minutes is required.

How do I submit my work?

All submissions have to be presented in PDF format, together with a sound recording. The recording can either be performed by a real performer or generated by computer software.

Can I edit the audio recording of my composition

Audio edits are fully allowed and will not have any influence on the jury votes.


1st prize

– The winners from each category will each receive a cash prize of 500 USD.
– The music from each category will be published by Edition Svitzer.
– The music from each category will be guaranteed performances in Europe, the USA and Asia during 2022.
– The score of the two winners will be promoted to 100 universities worldwide.

2nd prize

– The 2nd prize winners from each category will receive a cash price of 250 USD.

Audience Award

– The one winner will receive a cash prize of 100 USD.

What's the Audience Award?

All compositions will be uploaded to Edition Svitzer’s YouTube channel, and whichever composition gets the most likes will win the Audience Award.
